Writing my Way to the Soul

Growing up, looking in the mirror didn’t tell me much about who I was. My external world didn’t reflect back how I felt physically or emotionally. My face and skin didn’t look like the people around me, and I knew the way people saw me was not how I felt. I became detached from myself in so many ways but never could have put that into words at five years old, ten, fifteen...and 37 might be the first time for me to take the time to make clarity out of these blurry feelings.

The power of writing saved me from turning into the object that my family, society, and the reflection I was being shown wanted me to become. With writing I found freedom to express my emotions and found meaning in them and growth...and art. I found emotions to be the butter of life...the marinade that gave the bland things flavor and spice. But my internal world that baked these emotions was being denied and turned away as they came out of the oven. I was only allowed to be okay. Sadness, rage, and even being in love were shunned and dismissed.

But as I fight my way back to my whole entire self, the positive and the negative, I feel myself coming alive. I feel all the writing that I’ve been chipping away at to dig out my soul is finally making its way to the surface. And I’m realizing how important it is to have a reflection to see your emotions clearly...accurately...in order to see your whole entire self. And only when you see your whole entire self are you able to love yourself, share yourself, and allow others to completely love you.

Small batch available today at 10a central.
