Slow Lane Sees More

Out here it’s so much easier to be entertained and amused by things.  In society, we get so bombarded with new stimulation coming from all directions, not only does it become overwhelming, but it then takes more and more to become stimulated.  We become addicted to it.  But out here, where there’s less artificial stimulation, the more the tiny things become so interesting and fulfilling.  Like noticing the lizard run across the sand and seeing what tracks it leaves behind.  Hearing the wings of a raven paddle the wind and watching it catch an invisible wave.  Noticing the glow of the pink sand reflect off the belly of the clouds.  Or the way that golden hour spills slow like honey down the walls of the canyon.  It’s impossible to see these things when your mind is busy and racing - going the speed our culture requires us to go in order to maintain the flow of traffic or else becoming a serious risk of getting hit.  Out here, it’s easier to step out of the race and get a birds eye view of the casino we’ve all been raised in.  And just like any casino, it’s impossible to get ahead.  The house always wins in the end.  The only way to win is to hold on to what you’ve got and not play.
