Ruby
Ruby’s senses are incredibly sharp. In a split second she knows the facial expressions of everyone on sight, jumps into action as a dog lunges at us, spies a man kneeling in the bushes with a camera, all while maintaining a friendly demeanor and observing the tiniest flowers coming out to bloom. She notices the things that most people are blind to effortlessly. She reads feelings so accurately it’s as if she can read the past and into the future of others. It’s these skills of hers that have always made me feel safe to be around her and drawn to her instead of running away.
Though I didn’t understand the complexity of it all when we first met, now that I’ve begun to understand my whole self down to my central nervous system and how I am the way I am, I see now why we immediately got along so easily and so well. I see now why the walls have never been up around her and why we’ve always felt safe and understood. I see now that her inner child and my inner child sensed each other’s heightened awareness levels and never posed a threat to one another. Her eagle eyes and senses are the only senses I’ve been able to fully trust...especially in the moments that I can’t trust my own.
Her story is not mine to tell, but I have yet to meet someone who deserves the title as a warrior more than she does. It seems impossible to go through what she has and turned into the purely good and wonderfully magical human she’s become.
Wish I could take her with me as I leave Iowa City today to go back into nature.
Westbound.
