Patterns in Nature

Sometimes it’s hard to hear my own thoughts. I can’t tell what society wants of me, what’s a trauma response, what’s brainwashing and conditioning, and what my authentic self wants and needs. When it gets too convoluted to make the next move, I look for patterns in nature. Lately, I’ve been reading up and watching documentaries on the behaviors of wolves.

Wolves do everything for their family and are incredibly affectionate. But occasionally, one gets picked on or challenges the survival of the pack and is forced to leave. These lone wolves don’t want to be lone. It’s meant to be only temporary as they seek out a different pack or start their own in a new territory. Survival of a lone wolf is challenging and only the strong survive…if they can’t make it, some return to their original pack, others starve, or are killed. But the ones that do, often become alphas of a new pack, fulfilling an important role in the survival of the species.

I don’t want to be an alpha. But I find comfort in knowing that lone wolves are seeking connection. It helps me hear the cries of the baby inside me that never had a loving mother to teach her what was supposed to show up. What real love is. It helps me comfort her and know what she needs now and what she’s been howling for since birth. What she’s been wandering for all this time. And what direction I need to go.
