I Don’t Have a Mirror
Today I caught my reflection in the window of the water taxi and realized I don’t have a mirror in my van - not even one of those mirrors behind the sun visor. I can’t remember the last time I’ve looked at myself in one. I don’t even use public restrooms these days because my own toilet is never too far away. For all I know, I’m walking around with campfire ash on my face and stains on my clothes. No idea. The last shower I had was last week. But I like it this way. I don’t think I want a mirror in the van.
The other day I was thinking what would it be like if we all were invisible…no body…no face…no skin…no eyes…no gender…ageless…no clothes…no need for objects…not even food and water…nothing to give anybody any sort of preconceived notions of who we are or anything to separate us. Just pure energy and personality - just floating spirits that some how connect with one another. An authentic self in its purest form without the possibility of being influenced by others’ misconceptions of us. No opportunity for Charles Horton Cooley’s “Looking Glass Theory” to influence who we are or become. Who would we be? Who would we be friends with? Who would we fall in love with? Who would become leaders? Who would we want to be around? What would we be interested in?
I don’t know what not having a mirror has to do with this, but I feel like they’re related somehow in my mind - I just haven’t put it into words yet.
